    Canadian Tire return policy: time limits, receipts and warranties

    Short answer: at Canadian Tire, an unopened item in its original packaging, returned with the receipt within 90 days of purchase, qualifies for a refund or exchange. Several categories are exceptions: electronics have 30 days, auto electronics have 14 days, and some items can't be refunded or exchanged at all.

    What most guides leave out: the end of the return window isn't the end of your options. Many Canadian Tire products carry a multi-year exchange warranty, the manufacturer's warranty keeps running, and in Quebec the law adds its own warranty. The catch is that your receipt says nothing about any of it. This guide shows how to sort it out, with real Canadian Tire receipt examples.

    What is Canadian Tire's return policy?

    Canadian Tire's general rule is 90 days for unopened items in their original packaging, returned with the receipt. The refund goes back to the original payment method, or you can choose an exchange.

    You can return items to any Canadian Tire store, with some exceptions (see below). Four conditions come up in the policy:

    • The purchase receipt, as proof of purchase.
    • An unopened item in its original packaging. Opened, damaged or non-resalable items may be refused.
    • The return window for the item's category.
    • Valid photo ID, which may be required to confirm the return information.

    Return time limits by product type

    The 90-day window doesn't cover the whole store. Here are the main categories with a different time limit, according to the official policy.

    Can you return something to Canadian Tire without a receipt?

    Without a receipt, a Canadian Tire return may be refused. The policy does include a receipt look-up: the store can find a purchase paid by credit or debit card within 90 days of purchase.

    Receipt look-up covers card purchases. The official page doesn't describe an equivalent option for cash purchases, and it doesn't spell out no-receipt return terms beyond the look-up. If you don't have the receipt, bring the card you paid with and call your store before you go.

    The Refund Card

    Some returns are credited to a Canadian Tire Refund Card. According to the policy, this card:

    • can be used in Canadian Tire stores, but not online or at gas bars;
    • expires one year after its issue date (except in Saskatchewan), and any remaining balance is not returned after it expires;
    • can't be redeemed for cash or gift cards.

    Which items can't be refunded or exchanged?

    Some items bought at Canadian Tire can't be refunded or exchanged, receipt or not. The official list includes:

    • gift cards;
    • tinted paint and stain, and cut or modified products;
    • clearance, final sale and as-is merchandise;
    • firearms, ammunition and fireworks;
    • infant and child car seats, booster seats and travel systems;
    • breast pumps;
    • trading and collector cards, including Pokémon cards.

    Other items follow their own rule: bikes can't be returned, but a free tune-up is offered within 30 days with proof of purchase. Tire chains aren't refunded, but unused chains can be exchanged for a different size within 3 days. Live goods and some special-order automotive parts can only be returned to the original store.

    After the return window: warranties take over

    Once the return window has passed, you can't get a refund, but a defective item can still be exchanged, repaired or replaced. At Canadian Tire, three layers of protection can follow one another: the return, an in-store exchange warranty on some products, then the manufacturer's warranty. Under Canadian Tire's policy, a defective item falls under the manufacturer's warranty.

    Three stages after a Canadian Tire purchase: a 14 to 90 day return, an in-store exchange warranty depending on the product, then the manufacturer's warranty
    The return window closes fast; warranties often last much longer. Durations vary by product.

    The Canadian Tire exchange warranty

    Some products sold at Canadian Tire carry an exchange warranty: a defective item can be exchanged in store for a period shown on the product page. Here are two lines from a real Canadian Tire receipt scanned in the ReFound demo account:

    What the receipt says, and what ReFound found
    Receipt lineProduct identified by ReFoundWarranty found
    052-2124-0 LAMPE DEL GARAGNOMA LED Garage Light, 8000 Lumens5-year exchange at any Canadian Tire store
    184-2003-4 HLT NEO WK 4LBWA:KE Athletic Neoprene Hexagonal Dumbbell1-year exchange

    Nothing on the receipt tells you a light bought today can still be exchanged five years from now. Its return window closes after 90 days; its exchange warranty lasts twenty times longer. You still need to know it exists and find the receipt the day the light stops working. See the details of these examples on our Canadian Tire receipts page.

    The manufacturer's warranty

    The manufacturer's warranty covers defects, under each brand's terms. For some products, Canadian Tire sends opened items straight to the manufacturer, such as Apple for AirPods or EGO for its tools. Either way, you'll be asked for proof of purchase with the date. See how to keep receipts for warranties.

    In Quebec: the legal warranty and the new warranty of good working order

    In Quebec, the Consumer Protection Act adds a free, automatic legal warranty: goods must be fit for normal use for a reasonable period, and you can go to the merchant or the manufacturer.

    Since October 5, 2026, a warranty of good working order also applies to 14 categories of goods bought new from that date. The merchant or manufacturer must repair them free of charge for a set period, counted from delivery:

    Quebec warranty of good working order (goods bought new since October 5, 2026)
    GoodsDuration
    Stove, refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner, heat pump6 years
    Washer, dryer, dishwasher5 years
    Television4 years
    Computer, video game console, cell phone, tablet3 years

    So a TV bought new at Canadian Tire in Quebec can be returned within 30 days, like other electronics, but it has a 4-year warranty of good working order. To use it, you'll need to prove the purchase or delivery date.

    Returning an online order

    If an item ordered online arrives damaged or defective, Canadian Tire recommends returning it to a store. If that isn't possible, call 1-866-746-7287 (1-866-SHOP-CTR) with your order number and a description of the problem.

    Do stores have to accept returns in Canada?

    No. In Canada, businesses don't have to accept returned items unless they are defective. Most still offer refunds or exchanges under their own policy, according to the Consumer Measures Committee.

    That's why Canadian Tire's policy, not a general rule, decides what you can get. The same source notes that a sales receipt is almost always needed for a refund or exchange to be accepted.

    How to prepare a Canadian Tire return

    1. Find the receipt and check the purchase date.
    2. Identify the item's category and time limit: 90, 30 or 14 days.
    3. Put the item back in its original packaging, unopened if possible.
    4. Read the bottom of the receipt for restrictions, such as seasonal décor.
    5. Bring the payment card you used and photo ID.
    6. For live goods or a special-order part, go to the original store.

    The weakest step is often the first one: a thermal paper receipt can fade before the 90 days are up. See what to do with a faded receipt.

    With ReFound, the scanned receipt keeps a readable image, the receipt barcode when it's detected, and an estimated return deadline based on the merchant's general policy (90 days at Canadian Tire). For electronics or auto electronics, rely on the 30 or 14 day limits above instead. With ReFound Pro, a reminder arrives 3 days before the deadline. Whether the return is accepted is always up to Canadian Tire. Learn more about the returns app.

    A return without a receipt may be refused. The store can do a receipt look-up for a purchase paid by credit or debit card within 90 days.

    Opened, damaged or non-resalable items may be refused. If the item is defective, the manufacturer's warranty applies.

    Check whether it has a Canadian Tire exchange warranty (shown on the product page), then the manufacturer's warranty. In Quebec, the legal warranty may also apply. Either way, keep the receipt as proof of purchase.

    The official policy doesn't say whether a digital copy is accepted. A readable image can help find the purchase, but the decision is up to the store.
