Home Depot return policy: time limits, receipts and warranties
Short answer: at Home Depot Canada, most items can be returned within 90 days of purchase with a valid receipt, unused and in like-new condition. The window is 365 days for purchases made with a Home Depot credit card. Several categories only get 30 days, including TVs, computers, air conditioners and furniture, and major appliances cannot be returned at all.
What most summaries miss: the items with the shortest return window often have the longest warranty. In Quebec, a refrigerator bought new since October 5, 2026 cannot be returned at Home Depot, yet it has a 6-year warranty of good working order. This guide puts the two side by side, with dates worked out for a purchase made today.

What is the Home Depot return policy?
Home Depot Canada's general rule is 90 days from purchase with a valid sales receipt. It covers in-store purchases and online purchases, which can be returned to any Home Depot store in Canada.
Three conditions appear in the official policy:
- A valid sales receipt, which serves as proof of purchase.
- An unused item, in "like-new condition".
- The time limit for the item's category: 90 days, 30 days, or no returns.
The policy also asks you to report any product damage or defect within 30 days. For a delivered major appliance, that window is 48 hours after delivery.
Return windows by type of item
The 90-day window doesn't apply to the whole store. These are the categories with a different time limit, according to Home Depot Canada's official policy.

| Category | Window | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Most items (in store or online) | 90 days | With receipt, unused, like-new condition |
| Purchase made with a Home Depot credit card | 365 days | Per the card terms in the policy |
| Holiday décor, air conditioners, generators, furniture, TVs, printers, computers, gas-powered equipment | 30 days | Receipt required |
| Battery and corded equipment, including snow blowers | 30 days | From delivery or in-store purchase |
| Major appliances | No returns | Damage must be reported within 48 hours of delivery |
| Custom window coverings | Exception | Only if identified as "Guaranteed to Fit" |
| Some special orders | Varies | 15% restocking fee |

Can you return something to Home Depot without a receipt?
Sometimes, but not everything. For a return without a receipt, Home Depot requires acceptable government-issued photo ID, and the return is subject to verification system approval. The same applies to purchases paid with store credit.
For items on the 30-day list (TVs, computers, air conditioners, furniture, generators, gas-powered equipment, holiday décor, printers), the policy is clear: no refunds, exchanges or store credit without a receipt. It also says an item returned after 30 days or without a receipt may be sent out for repair and treated as customer-owned merchandise.
The official page doesn't say how a no-receipt return is refunded for other items. If you no longer have the receipt, call your store before you go, and bring the card you paid with.
What can't you return to Home Depot?
Some items cannot be returned to Home Depot Canada, receipt or not. The official list includes:
- major appliances;
- gift cards, gift certificates and store credits;
- custom-made products and custom-tinted paint (except "Guaranteed to Fit" window coverings);
- standby generators, wallpaper, spas and hot tubs, and utility trailers;
- online flooring samples;
- donations to The Home Depot Canada Foundation.
Purchases made at homedepot.com or other Home Depot companies may be refused in Canada unless the item is stocked or sold in the store where you return it. A used gas-powered lawn mower, tractor or snow blower isn't taken back: it will be repaired, if possible, under the manufacturer's warranty.
After the return window: the warranties that take over
Once the return window is over, or if there never was one, a defective item can still be repaired or replaced under a warranty. A warranty doesn't extend the return window: it's a different remedy that gets you a repair or a replacement, not a refund.
The manufacturer's warranty
Most products sold at Home Depot carry a manufacturer's warranty whose length and terms depend on the brand and model. It's the route Home Depot's policy points to for used gas-powered equipment. Either way, you'll be asked for dated proof of purchase. See the difference between a store guarantee and a manufacturer warranty.
In Quebec: the warranty of good working order since October 5, 2026
Since October 5, 2026, a legal warranty of good working order applies in Quebec to 14 categories of goods bought or leased new from a merchant. The merchant or the manufacturer must repair them free of charge for a set period, counted from delivery. It comes on top of the existing legal warranty, which requires goods to be fit for normal use for a reasonable length of time.
Many of these goods are exactly the ones Home Depot takes back for the shortest time. Here is the math for a purchase made on November 1, 2026 and delivered the same day, in Quebec:
| Item | Home Depot return | Return ends (about) | Warranty of good working order | Warranty ends (about) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator, stove, freezer | No returns | — | 6 years | November 2032 |
| Washer, dryer, dishwasher | No returns | — | 5 years | November 2031 |
| Air conditioner | 30 days | December 1, 2026 | 6 years | November 2032 |
| Television | 30 days | December 1, 2026 | 4 years | November 2030 |
| Laptop or desktop computer | 30 days | December 1, 2026 | 3 years | November 2029 |

An air conditioner can be returned for 30 days, but its warranty of good working order lasts about 73 times longer. It doesn't cover normal maintenance or damage you caused, and you choose whether to go to the merchant or the manufacturer. To use it five years from now, you'll need to show when and where the item was bought and delivered: the receipt or the delivery invoice is the simplest proof.

Returning a Home Depot online order
An item ordered on homedepot.ca can be returned to any Home Depot store in Canada within 90 days of purchase, subject to the category exceptions. Some eligible products can also be returned online.
You can also call customer service within 90 days: Home Depot arranges for the item to be picked up and gives you a return authorization number (RA#). Keep that number with your order confirmation.
What a Home Depot receipt doesn't tell you
A Home Depot receipt proves the date and amount of a purchase, but the description is often too abbreviated to tell what you bought. Here are two lines from a Home Depot receipt scanned in the ReFound demo account:
| Receipt line | Product identified by ReFound |
|---|---|
| XL VT BOT <A> | Wrigley's Excel Bottle Spearmint Sugar Free Gum 60s |
| 1 4" BLK <A> chithe | 4-inch Black House Number 1 - 1pc |
With chewing gum, not much is at stake. With an air conditioner or a power tool, the same kind of abbreviation leaves you unsure which model you own and which warranty applies. Add thermal paper, which can fade long before a multi-year warranty ends. Details on these examples are on our Home Depot receipts page.
ReFound keeps a readable image of the receipt, identifies the product behind an abbreviated line when the merchant's data allows, and shows the store or manufacturer warranty when it's available, with its end date. It also estimates a return deadline based on the merchant's general policy: for a TV, a computer or a snow blower, go by the 30-day window above instead. With ReFound Pro, a reminder arrives 3 days before the return deadline and 30 days before a warranty ends. Whether a return is accepted is always up to Home Depot.
