Walmart Canada Return Policy: Time Limits, 2026 Holidays and Warranties
Short answer: at Walmart Canada, almost anything bought with a valid proof of purchase can be returned or exchanged within 90 days. Consumer electronics (TVs, laptops, consoles, unlocked phones, headphones…) and optical items have 30 days, and contract post-paid phones have 14 days.
For the 2026 holidays, Walmart extends the window for unopened items bought from November 1 to December 25 that have a 30-day window: they can be returned until January 24, 2027. This guide works out, date by date, what that really changes, and shows what still protects a TV or a console once the return window has closed.
Policy checked on walmart.ca on November 4, 2026. It can change: when in doubt, the official page and your store have the final say.

What is Walmart Canada's return policy?
Walmart Canada's general rule is a 90-day window: with a valid proof of purchase, almost anything you buy from Walmart, in store or on Walmart.ca, can be returned or exchanged within that time, except for the exceptions listed in the policy.
When the clock starts depends on where you bought the item:
- In store: the return window begins on the purchase date.
- Online: the return window begins on the date your order arrives.
- Exchanges: an item that isn't eligible for a return isn't eligible for an exchange either. Exchanges follow the same windows as returns.
Refunds go back to the original payment method. For an in-store return paid by debit, if you don't have the card with you, the refund is issued on a Walmart gift card, according to Walmart's refund timelines page.
Return windows by type of item
The 90-day window doesn't apply to electronics. Here are the windows in Walmart Canada's standard return policy:
| Category | Window | Examples from the policy |
|---|---|---|
| Almost all items | 90 days | With a valid proof of purchase |
| Consumer electronics | 30 days | TVs, laptops, computers, tablets, video game consoles, video games, unlocked and prepaid phones, cameras, monitors, printers, headphones, drones with GPS, wearables, e-readers, software, movies and music |
| Optical | 30 days | Contact lenses, glasses |
| Contract post-paid phones | 14 days | Under the standard policy |
| Orders fulfilled by Walmart from outside Canada | 30 days | No store returns; start the return on Walmart.ca or in the app |

2026 holiday returns: until January 24, 2027
Unopened items bought from November 1 to December 25, 2026 that normally have a 30-day return window can be returned until January 24, 2027, with proof of purchase. The extension covers items sold by Walmart and Marketplace items fulfilled by Walmart.
There are three exclusions: items sold and shipped by Marketplace sellers, contract post-paid wireless devices, and final sale items.
What the extension changes, date by date
The extension doesn't help everyone equally. The earlier you buy, the more you gain. We worked out the deadlines for typical holiday purchases (in-store purchase date plus the number of days in the window):

| Purchase | Regular deadline | With the holiday extension | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| TV, November 1 | December 1, 2026 | January 24, 2027 | 54 days |
| Game console, November 27 | December 27, 2026 | January 24, 2027 | 28 days |
| Headphones, December 15 | January 14, 2027 | January 24, 2027 | 10 days |
| Tablet, December 24 | January 23, 2027 | January 24, 2027 | 1 day |
| Toy (90 days), December 15 | March 15, 2027 | Not applicable | The regular window is already longer |
| Contract post-paid phone, November 27 | December 11, 2026 | Excluded | None |
Two practical takeaways. First, an electronics gift bought early in November gets the most out of the extension; a last-minute purchase gains almost nothing. Second, the extension requires an unopened item: a console unwrapped on December 25 doesn't qualify under this rule.
How we counted
Can you return something to Walmart without a receipt?
Walmart Canada's standard policy requires a valid proof of purchase for a return or exchange. The official pages we reviewed don't describe a no-receipt return process in store, so don't count on an exception.
For an online purchase, the proof of purchase is already in your account: when you're signed in, the return window appears above each item in your purchase history. If you checked out as a guest, the deadline is in the official receipt email sent when your order ships.
For an in-store purchase, the paper receipt is the proof. It's also the most fragile document: a thermal receipt left in a coat pocket can fade before the 90 days are up. See what to do with a faded receipt.

Items bought from a Walmart Marketplace seller
On Walmart.ca, an item sold and shipped by a third-party Marketplace seller follows a different policy. Most Marketplace sellers offer a minimum 30-day window from the delivery date, and some items have only 14 days, including computers and laptops, tablets and e-readers, video game consoles, monitors, printers and wearable tech.
- A Marketplace item with a retail price above $250 can't be returned in store; it goes back directly to the seller.
- In store, the item must include all original packaging and materials.
- The valid proof of purchase is the order number.
So before buying a laptop on Walmart.ca, check who's selling it: sold by Walmart, it has 30 days; sold and shipped by a Marketplace seller, it may have only 14, with no holiday extension.
Which items can't be returned to Walmart?
Some items can't be returned to Walmart Canada, even with a receipt. The official list includes:
- alcohol, prepaid phone cards and gift cards (Walmart and third-party);
- digital downloads, including e-books and downloaded software;
- trading, gaming and collectible cards, and magazines;
- prescription medication and diabetic products (glucometers, test strips, lancets);
- certain hygienic medical equipment, family planning products and sexual wellness items;
- fireworks and products with flammable components (fuel, motor oil, paints, cleaners).
After the return window: what still protects your purchase
Once the return window has closed, Walmart's policy no longer offers a refund, but a defective item isn't necessarily a loss. The manufacturer's warranty still applies under its own terms, and in Quebec the law adds two warranties. These are different remedies (repair, replacement), not a refund: they don't extend the return window.
Quebec's warranty of good working order
Since October 5, 2026, a warranty of good working order applies to 14 categories of goods bought new from a merchant on or after that date. For a set period, counted from delivery, the merchant or the manufacturer must repair the item for free if it stops working. Several of these goods fall right into Walmart's 30-day electronics category:

| Remedy | Until | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Regular return (electronics, 30 days) | December 27, 2026 | Refund or exchange, under the policy |
| Return with the holiday extension (unopened) | January 24, 2027 | Refund or exchange, under the policy |
| Warranty of good working order (4 years) | Around November 27, 2030, counted from delivery | Free repair by the merchant or manufacturer |
| Legal warranty | A reasonable time, depending on the item | Goods must be fit for normal use for a reasonable time |
The warranty of good working order lasts 6 years for a stove, refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner or heat pump; 5 years for a washer, dryer or dishwasher; 4 years for a TV; and 3 years for a laptop or desktop computer, video game console, cell phone or tablet.
The catch: your receipt has to last four years
To use a warranty, you have to be able to show when and where the item was bought. A TV bought during the 2026 holidays is covered until 2030, but the thermal receipt printed at the checkout wasn't made to last that long, and nothing on it says a four-year warranty exists. For the details, see how to keep receipts for warranties and the difference between a store guarantee and a manufacturer warranty.
How to prepare a Walmart return
- Find your proof of purchase: the paper receipt for an in-store purchase, your purchase history or receipt email for an online order.
- Check the item's window: 90 days, 30 days for electronics and optical, 14 days for a contract phone.
- For a purchase between November 1 and December 25, check whether the January 24, 2027 extension applies: unopened item, regular 30-day window.
- Check who sold the item on Walmart.ca: Walmart or a Marketplace seller.
- Bring the card you paid with, especially if you paid by debit.
- For a large item bought online, schedule a pickup instead of going to the store.
With ReFound, the scanned receipt keeps a readable image, the receipt barcode when it's detected, and the payment method. ReFound also shows an estimated return deadline based on the merchant's general policy: it doesn't account for the 30-day electronics window or the holiday extension. For a TV or a console, go by the dates above. With ReFound Pro, a reminder arrives 3 days before the estimated deadline. Whether a return is accepted is always up to Walmart. Does a store have to accept returns in Canada?
No. In Canada, businesses aren't required to accept returned items unless they're defective, the Government of Canada's Office of Consumer Affairs notes. So Walmart's policy, not a general rule, decides what you can get for an item that works fine but isn't right for you.
