    RONA Return Policy: Time Limits, Receipts and Warranties

    Short answer: at RONA, most items can be returned within 90 days of purchase, in their original condition and packaging, with the original receipt. Appliances get only 30 days and must go back to the store where they were bought. Trees, shrubs and perennials can be replaced or refunded for one year, with the receipt.

    Without a receipt, the return is at RONA's discretion and refunded at the lowest system price, as store credit or a gift card. This guide adds what the official page doesn't: dates calculated for a purchase made on October 5, 2026, the day Quebec's warranty of good working order took effect, the warranties that take over after the return window, and a real RONA receipt whose printed line doesn't say which product was bought.

    What is RONA's return policy?

    RONA's general rule is a 90-day window after purchase for any product other than appliances. It covers both in-store and online purchases.

    Three conditions come up in the official policy:

    • The product comes back in its original condition and packaging.
    • The original sales receipt comes with it. With that receipt you can choose a refund, an exchange or store credit, and the refund goes back to the original method of payment.
    • The product is not one of the exceptions: appliances (30 days), perennials (1 year) or items that can't be returned.

    The policy ends with two caveats: RONA Inc. may limit or refuse a return, and the policy may be modified at any time without notice. Check it before a large return.

    Return windows by type of item

    The 90-day window doesn't apply to the whole store. Here are the windows by category under RONA's official policy, with the deadline for a purchase made on October 5, 2026, the day Quebec's warranty of good working order took effect.

    Can you return something to RONA without a receipt?

    Sometimes, but it isn't a right. Under RONA's policy, an item returned without the original sales receipt, or without its original packaging, may be accepted at RONA Inc.'s discretion.

    If the return is accepted, you get the lowest system price, as store credit or a gift card. In practice, an item you paid $129 for that went on sale for $89 during that period may be credited at only $89, and the money doesn't go back on your card.

    For appliances and for perennials, the policy requires the receipt: without it, those two exceptions don't apply. If you no longer have the paper receipt, a readable digital copy showing the date, store and amount is your best chance of keeping the full refund. The store is still free to accept it or not.

    Which items can't be returned to RONA?

    Some items can't be returned to RONA, receipt or not. The official policy excludes:

    • tinted paint and stain;
    • products that have been cut to length, modified or customized in any way;
    • special orders;
    • certain products for hygiene reasons (toilet seats, masks, gloves, etc.);
    • used power equipment, including lawnmowers, trimmers and snowblowers;
    • gift cards, gift certificates and store credit, which can't be exchanged for cash.

    A store may also refuse an item bought at another RONA Inc. banner if it doesn't carry it in its regular selection. Whenever possible, return the item to a store of the same banner you bought it from.

    RONA appliances: 30 days, 48 hours and 25%

    An appliance bought at RONA can be returned or exchanged within 30 days of purchase for a reason other than a defect or damage. It has to go back to the store where it was bought, with the original receipt, in its original condition, without any damage or scratches.

    • 48 hours to report damage or a defect: after delivery for a delivered appliance, after purchase for one you took home yourself.
    • 25% of the purchase price as a restocking fee for a delivered appliance returned for a refund, and for cancelling a special order before delivery.
    • Exchanging a delivered appliance comes with delivery and pick-up fees instead.

    After the return window: warranties take over

    Once the return window has passed, a defective product can still be repaired or replaced under a warranty. RONA's policy says so itself: damaged or defective products are subject to the legal or manufacturer's warranty, as applicable. A warranty doesn't extend the return window; it is a different remedy.

    The manufacturer warranty

    Most tools, appliances and products sold at RONA carry a manufacturer warranty whose length and terms vary by brand and model. It almost always asks for dated proof of purchase. See the difference between a store warranty and a manufacturer warranty.

    In Quebec: the legal warranty

    In Quebec, the legal warranty applies automatically and at no charge to tools and materials, even if the merchant or manufacturer claims to sell the item with no warranty. The item must serve its intended purpose for a reasonable time, given the price paid, the contract and the conditions of use. The Office de la protection du consommateur adds that a merchant may not require you to deal with the manufacturer.

    The warranty of good working order since October 5, 2026

    Since October 5, 2026, a warranty of good working order applies in Quebec to many appliances and electronic devices bought or leased new from a merchant. The item must be repaired free of charge for 3 to 6 years, counted from delivery. You can go to the merchant or the manufacturer, your choice. Regular maintenance and damage you cause are not covered.

    At RONA, the appliances, which have the shortest return window, are exactly the items with the longest warranty. Here is the calculation for a purchase made on October 5, 2026 and delivered the same day, in Quebec:

    A refrigerator can be returned for 30 days, but its warranty of good working order lasts about 73 times longer. The smart thermostat isn't on the list of covered goods: after 90 days, it relies on the manufacturer warranty and the legal warranty. Either way, Quebec's consumer protection office recommends keeping a document that proves the delivery date: an invoice, a confirmation email, a delivery slip or a receipt.

    What a RONA receipt doesn't tell you

    A RONA receipt proves the date, store and amount of a purchase, but not always the exact product or its warranty. Here is one line from a RONA receipt scanned in the ReFound demo account:

    What the receipt says, and what ReFound identified
    Printed lineProduct identified by ReFoundWarranty shown
    THERMOSTAT INT/SMRTSENSOR PREMEcobee Smart Premium Black Wi-Fi Compatible Thermostat and Room Sensor3-year limited manufacturer warranty

    The line says "thermostat", but not the brand, the model or how long the warranty lasts. That is exactly what you'll be asked in two years, when the device stops working. By then the thermal paper will have faded: see what to do with a faded receipt.

    ReFound keeps the printed line as is and attaches, when the information is available, the named product, its photo and a link to its product page on rona.ca. The 3-year manufacturer warranty in this example comes from that page: when rona.ca lists it, ReFound picks it up. This is a demo example: identification depends on the product and the data available. See more examples on our RONA receipts page.

    Returning a RONA online order

    An item ordered on rona.ca can be returned three ways under the official policy (except appliances, which have their own section):

    • online, from the Returns and Orders page of your account;
    • in store, at the store where you picked up the order, with your sales receipt;
    • by phone, through customer service: 1-866-283-2239 (toll-free), Monday to Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. (ET).

    For an online order, the confirmation email and the pickup receipt are your proof of purchase. Keep them together.

    How to prepare a return at RONA

    1. Check the window for the category: 90 days, 30 days for an appliance, 1 year for a tree, shrub or perennial.
    2. Make sure the item isn't excluded: tinted paint, cut to length, special order, used power equipment.
    3. Put the item back in its original condition and packaging.
    4. Bring the original receipt and the card you paid with: the refund goes back to the original method of payment.
    5. For an appliance, go back to the store where it was bought, and report any damage within 48 hours.
    6. If the item is defective and the window has passed, ask for a warranty repair, with dated proof of purchase.

    To find the right receipt at the counter, ReFound's return view shows the item, the receipt barcode when it's detected, the payment method and the photo of the original receipt. See the in-store returns app.

    Keep your RONA receipts for returns and warranties

    Scan the receipt the day you buy: ReFound keeps a readable copy, identifies the product when it can and shows its warranty when it's available.
